The 2007 US Horse Plowing Championships were held over Labor Day weekend at Carriage Hill MetroPark and Farm in Huber Heights, Ohio just north of Dayton. This was the third year for this event and there were representatives from New York, Kentucky, Virginia, Connecticut, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma. There were also a few competitors from Canada who made the trip to represent their country. The weather was a little bit warm, but not overbearing. There had been little or no rain in this area for the last few months. The ground was dry and presented a challenge to the competitors. Saturday was for practice and some fun events. The competition started at 10AM on Sunday and there were competitors in the fields all day on Sunday and on Monday until late in the afternoon when the event winners were announced. A three judge panel was used to evaluate the competitor's results. There were classes for the various state competition winners and there was an open class for those who were not state winners. The facility is a public park and the park management was extremely supportive and accommodating to both the competitors and the viewing public. Over the three days of the event, there were probably several thousand spectators who stopped and watched the activities, some for only a few minutes and others for the entire event. For many of them, this was their first introduction to draft horses. The event was a great success! It was well organized. There were a lot of competitors and a large number of spectators. Everyone involved is already looking forward to next year's event.
Charles "The Legend" Orme and his 7 horse Belgian hitch on the two bottom Pioneer gangplow is a big hit any time he shows up.
