2011 Wagon Train
The annual wagon train of the Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule Association for 2011 started on Saturday, September 10. The club had decided to ride northeast on the Indiana side of the Ohio River before crossing over into Kentucky. The plan was to then travel southwest through Kentucky before crossing over into Indiana back down the river. Overall the route would cover about 150 miles in 9 days. As always, the plans had been in the works for the entire past year starting right after the end of last year's ride. Over the winter, the members had built a first class chuck wagon to be taken along on the trip. It was used to carry the eating supplies and provided a central spot for cooking all of the group's meals.
There were 9-10 wagons each day and anywhere from 6 to 9 outriders. Overall, the weather was not a problem although there was a big drop in temperatures after the first two days. There were a few rain showers, but they occurred overnight. The group used radios and safety vests on their outriders to facilitate the safe movement of traffic around the wagons. The 5th day involved crossing the Ohio River from Indian to Kentucky and arrangements had been made with police on both sides to temporarily halt traffic while the group crossed. On that same day, the wagon train made a stop at a primary school in Battletown Kentucky to allow the youngsters to see the horses and mules.
Your photographer was able to ride along with the group for the first 5 days before leaving on the morning of the 6th day due to a prior commitment. The photos available through the links below are arranged by day and there are also photos taken on the morning of the 6th day as the group started out on their ride for that day.
