Asbury University is a multi-denominational Christian Liberal Arts University located in Wilmore, Ky. about 20 miles southwest of Lexington in the heart of the bluegrass area of central Kentucky. The university held their third annual Draft Horse Day on Saturday, September 24, 2011. Asbury joined with the world renowned equine studies program at the University of Kentucky to hold an event with emphasis on the working horse. The public was welcome. There were pony rides and face painting for the children along with demonstrations by students in the Asbury Equine Management program of several equestrian disciplines. There were some fun competitions for the draft horses owners in attendance and after lunch, the Asbury vaulting team put on a spectacular demonstration of their skills. The highlight of the day was the groundbreaking ceremony for the "Mission Farm" by Asbury University President, Sandra Gray. The idea behind the Mission Farm is to help students learn the information and skills needed to grow wholesome fruits, vegetables and livestock, and to be able to adapt that knowledge to any mission situation to which they are called. The project is a collaborative effort involving faculty and instructors from several of Asbury’s academic departments, as well as the University of Kentucky and Berea College. After the groundbreaking ceremony, anyone who wished was given the opportunity to try their hand at plowing behind the draft horses in attendance. It was a beautiful day and the photos below reflect the fun had by all. The only disappointment of the entire day for your photographer was that he did not get selected to win one of those great Asbury Draft Horse Day hats to add to his collection. I hope you enjoy the attached photos.
